"In art we enter into a dialogue... my starting point is always the personal, though it has the potential to become universal"

Towards the end of 2025 I was fortunate enough to be made Artist-in-Residence for the West Pier Trust. This position represents a huge opportunity to have the time, space and support to fully examine my own relationship to this edifice and its environs, having been born and grown up in its shadow.
The impetus for this artistic journey was the
discovery of a detailed illustration I saw in the
West Pier Centre when I happened to visit at
the beginning of the year.
The thing is, I had lived with this illustration for
as long as I could remember, having believed my
father had drawn it. And here it was again under
the name of another artist. But now, with my
father gone, I question my belief - was I told by
my father of its authorship, or did I just presume
he had drawn it either with his acknowledgement
or not. It is a mystery. My father was full of mystery. And I hold none of the answers.
My only recourse to a solution could be a speculative fiction at best - it would rely on what I do know of my father. So as part of my residency I aim is to create a body of work that explores what this might be.
