Blue Blanket Series

date

2018 -2019

Project type

Sculpture

I came across an article by the author W. S. Burroughs in which he wrote about his interest in the 'orgone accumulator' - a device designed by Wilhelm Reich for ostensibly collecting orgone energy from the environment to be applied medically for the improvement of general health and vitality. Borroughs had one built in his New York loft; it was made from plywood, just big enough for one person to sit inside, it was then lined alternatively with cork, steel, and old rabbit-fur coats.
This led me to thinking about other ways to engender feelings of comfort and well being when faced with the uncomfortable, which inevitably made me think of the security blanket of childhood. A blue blanket, that had belonged to my brother when he was a baby, appears in all three pieces in this series - a scarred hand is cushioned upon it, a rickety staircase is carpeted in it, and it is one of the organic elements included in the 'wardrobe orgone accumulator'.
